They only had to drive thirty yards, but getting across looked tough.

Erika took the wheel as Raven jumped into the back, vaulting over the side to drop low in the truck bed. Smoke drifted across the windscreen; the sweat clinging to her skin smelled of it, as did her clothes. She felt dirty and sooty but the goal was in sight.

She hoped.

Raven opened fire with his HK as she started the engine, giving the key already in the ignition a sharp twist. She flinched with every burst Raven fired. With the smoke as thick as it was, she couldn’t see who he was shooting at. How did he know there was somebody there? She pulled the gearstick to Drive and stepped on the accelerator.

Then she understood Raven wasn’t wasting ammo because the truck went thump-bump over fallen bodies.

The smoke cleared a little as she drove forward, as if the truck was a jet descending through a cloud layer on the way to landing. She steered the surging vehicle toward troops in her path, the headlamps shining on frightened faces in the last second as troops ran away or fell to the pop pop of Raven’s weapon. Erika kept her head low as return fire smacked into the truck’s body, but not the windshield. Not yet. They were shooting at Raven. She panicked as his gun fell silent. A glance in the rearview provided the answer. He’d dropped below the truck bed walls to reload. Magazine in place, he engaged targets once again. Pop pop pop.

She wrenched the wheel right and slammed the brake pedal as they reached the first portable building. Darbo and Lia radioed they had the truck covered, but no troops approached. The enemy guns had gone silent. Raven leapt from the truck bed and ran to the portable’s door. Erika watched with wide eyes. Was her mother inside?

Kwang!

The shot ricocheted off the frame of the windshield and snapped Erika from her trance. She threw herself sideways across the bench seat. A flurry of automatic fire followed, then Darbo spoke over the com. “We got him. Looks like everybody else ran off. But hurry, the fire’s spreading.”

“Copy, Darbo.” She watched Raven open the portable’s door. He entered with his HK leading the way. A pair of hands reached out from inside, grabbed the barrel, and pulled hard. The hands yanked Raven inside and swung him to the opposite wall where he crashed hard enough to make the building shake.

No!

Erika grabbed her HK and left the truck.
